Aphid - Prevention & Control
Share
Ensure you have preventative Koppert aphid control in place before you see pests in the crop.
It may only be January, and yes, it is cold outside. But if you have protected crops, and something akin to frost protection or greater in terms of temperature, you could still have aphid present in the crop.
It's not unusual. Certainly, many edible crop growers will start early in the year with aphid control as a preventative measure.
Look under the leaves for evidence of aphid. It may help to have a magnifying lens to hand. If you don't have a hand lens, you can purchase one by clicking here...
Introductions of AphiScout would be beneficial. AphiScout is a blend of five beneficial predators for the control of a wide range of aphids.
AphiScout will arrive in a small cardboard cylinder (tube) containing 250 predators, including Aphidius ervi, Aphelinus abdominalis, Praon volucre and Ephedrus cerasicola.
- For application - Peel off the outer layer of the label starting at the upper right corner
- Hang the cylinder horizontally from a crop wire, branch, or leaf stalk by winding the label around it and sticking the end of the label back onto itself
- Turn the lid until the small holes align with the opening

Last, but not least, yellow sticky traps. Insect pests are attracted to the colour of the sticky trap and get caught in the glue. Sticky traps can be used for mass trapping and for monitoring.
It is beneficial to have traps in and around the crop all year round. Horiver yellow sticky traps (10x25cm – 10 traps per pack) have a printed grid for easy counting of what’s been trapped.
Place/hang traps in areas with high risk of pest infestation such as areas near doors, gable ends and lateral ventilation openings. Hang approx’ 30cm above the crop.
